Cursor Composer: how to review AI-generated multi-file edits before you apply them
Cursor’s Composer — now branded as Agent mode in recent versions — is the feature that separates Cursor from a simple autocomplete tool. You describe a task in the Composer pane, and Cursor generates changes across multiple files simultaneously: new files, edited files, updated imports, adjusted config. The result appears in a per-file diff view with Accept and Reject buttons. When it looks right, you click Apply All and the changes land in your working tree.
The attention problem in Composer is different from Cursor’s inline autocomplete, which was covered in the breathing exercises for Cursor developers post. That post is about single-line ghost text and the Tab reflex. Composer is about multi-file generation where the interface itself looks like a review is happening — and the apply decision arrives before the review has had a chance to start.
Why Cursor Composer’s attention problem is specific to the multi-file workflow
Single-file AI tools have a natural review moment: the generation finishes, you read the result, you accept or reject. Composer removes that natural pause by generating across files simultaneously. By the time generation completes, the result is already spread across 4, 6, or 10 files. The diff view is presented as the review surface, but looking at a diff is not the same as reviewing it. The visual structure of green additions and red deletions triggers a familiarity response — it looks like a pull request review — without requiring the mental engagement that a pull request review actually demands.
This is the core problem: Composer’s interface borrows the visual language of code review without the friction that makes code review work. The Apply All button is always one click away from the moment generation finishes.
The three Cursor Composer attention traps
1. The streaming generation trance
When Composer runs, you can watch the code appear across files in real time. File names flash in the panel, lines stream in, the terminal shows tool calls. This creates the sensation of watching something being explained to you — as if the generation process itself is a live walkthrough of the changes.
It is not. The streaming is a rendering artifact, not a narration. The correct moment for review is after generation completes and the diff is stable. But by then, the attention budget that could have been spent reading has already been spent watching. The generation stream consumes the pause that would otherwise be a review window. Watching Composer work is the vibe-coding equivalent of watching a file copy progress bar: it feels productive but produces no useful information about the result.
2. The diff surface looks like a review decision has been made
After generation, Cursor presents each changed file as a green/red diff with per-file Accept and Reject buttons. This visual pattern maps directly to a decade of code review muscle memory. You have seen this interface in GitHub, in GitLab, in your IDE’s git panel. The green/red presentation combined with an Accept button is the visual signature of “here is a change that has been proposed for you to approve.”
The trap is that the familiar ritual substitutes for the actual review. Scrolling a diff and clicking Accept generates the same cognitive closure as approving a pull request — the “I reviewed this” feeling fires — even if you only skimmed the green lines. Approval is a confirmation step, not a review step. The review has to happen before you reach for Accept, not as you click it.
3. First-file trust bleeds into the remaining files
Composer’s most common failure mode is not in the first file it touches. The first file usually implements the core of what you asked for, and it is usually correct enough. The risk accumulates in the later files: helper functions, updated tests, adjusted configuration, new imports added to existing modules. These are the files Composer generated under the constraint of making the first file work, not the files you described in your prompt.
When file 1 looks correct, the prior for file 2 rises. By file 6 of 8, you are reviewing with the accumulated trust of five correct files, and the scrutiny applied to file 6 is a fraction of what file 1 received. This is exactly the wrong direction. The later files in a Composer run are the ones that introduce regressions, unexpected dependencies, and silent behavior changes in adjacent code.
Three fixes
Start with the last file in the diff list
When the diff view opens, scroll past the first file to the last one. Read the last file in the list before you read the first. Composer’s most speculative changes — the ones generated under the most inference pressure, the furthest from what you explicitly asked for — are at the end of the generation sequence. Starting there surfaces the highest-risk changes before the first-file trust has a chance to accumulate. If the last file looks wrong, you have caught the problem before the first-file success convinced you everything was fine.
After reading the last file, work backward. Last → second-to-last → first. This reverses the natural reading order and directly counteracts the trust-accumulation trap.
Name one invariant before sending each Composer task
Before clicking send on a Composer prompt, write down one specific binary question about what must not change. Not “does this look correct?” — that question has no verifiable answer when you are looking at a diff. Something like: “Does this keep the auth check before the database call in user.service.ts?” or “Does this preserve the existing API response format in routes/items.ts?”
After the diff appears, search for that file first. Check that specific invariant before evaluating anything else. One concrete binary check converts the general “review the diff” task into a targeted scan with a pass/fail result. It takes fifteen seconds and consistently surfaces the class of error Composer is most likely to introduce: correctly implementing the requested feature while silently breaking an adjacent assumption it did not know about.
Use the Reject button as a forcing function, not a veto
Cursor’s diff view has per-file Accept and Reject buttons. Use Reject deliberately, not just when something is clearly wrong. If any file had a change you were not immediately certain about, click Reject, read the file once more from the start of the changed section, then click Accept. The mechanical Reject → re-read → Accept sequence takes ten seconds and changes the gesture from passive confirmation to active evaluation.
Reject does not discard the change permanently. It flags the file for a second look. Using it as a forcing function — a way to pause before accepting — builds the habit of reading before confirming rather than confirming because the diff looked like it had been reviewed.
Cursor Composer is one of the highest-leverage tools in this series because multi-file changes that are correct are genuinely fast to ship. The review challenge scales with that leverage: multi-file changes that are wrong are harder to untangle than single-file changes, and they are introduced by an interface that looks exactly like a review is already happening.
Starting from the last file, naming one invariant in advance, and using Reject deliberately converts Composer from a passive generation-watching experience into an active review practice. The diff view is the right surface. The question is whether you are reading it or just scrolling it.
